Rebels News · PRESS RELEASE: MHS Plans for Summer Team Activities

Maryville, TN (May 14, 2020) – Maryville City Schools will reopen school buildings for limited
use starting May 18th. Activities approved to use the facilities in the early phases of reopening
include teacher use of the buildings, the reopening of adventure club, and athletic team use at
Maryville High School (MHS).

Safety will be the guiding principle for teams as they begin summer workouts at MHS. As athletic activities slowly resume through the end of May, staff and students will follow specific Phase 1 guidelines as noted below.

With approval from the Director of Schools and input from the Blount County Health Department and Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA), the plan for Maryville High School athletic teams in Phase 1 will follow best practices for small group gatherings. Directions for coaches and players include limiting groups to nine or fewer players, strict guidelines for arrival and departure, no large group congregating, and more. The locker rooms at MHS are closed through the end of May. All equipment used for sports during May will be sterilized daily

Any student or family who feels uncomfortable being with small groups of students during skills training or workouts will be excused without penalty. The coaching staff asks parents or students to communicate with them if they do not wish to participate in these optional activities. Likewise, any student athlete in the football program with a trip planned during the week starting May 24 will be excused from practice. Again, parents or students should communicate family plans with the coaching staff.

Traditional summer workout schedules with applicable social-distancing guidelines will be released as Phase 2 plans are finalized and will be subject to change based on guidance from government and medical authorities.
