Maryville High School Head Tennis Coach Christian Burns has been in the tennis industry for twenty-six years. Beginning in 1989 under the guidance of former University of Tennessee Head Men’s Tennis Coach Mike DePalmer Sr., Burns began his tennis teaching career at the Big Orange Tennis Camp. From 1995 to 1998, Coach Burns was on the junior tennis staff at “the toughest playground in the World”, the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy (NBTA) in Bradenton, Florida. While at the NBTA, Coach Burns worked with some of the top junior players in the World including Maria Sharapova, Tatiana Golivin, Jelena Jankovic, and Andre Sa.

In 1998, Coach Burns returned to East Tennessee to take the helm of the Maryville College Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams. While at Maryville College, he led the Lady Scots to back to back Great South Athletic Conference titles in 2001 and 2002. Coach Burns was named GSAC Men’s Coach of the Year in 2001 and GSAC Women’s Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2002.

Coach Burns is a former Associate Tennis Pro at Centre Court Racquet Club. He is currently the Head Tennis Pro at Gettysvue Country Club in Knoxville, Tennessee. Coach Burns is a board member of the Greater Knoxville Tennis Association (GKTA). He is also the Co-Coordinator for the GKTA Junior Team Tennis program, which is the largest in the state of Tennessee, serving over 800 kids from ages 6 to 18. Coach Burns is also the Coordinator of the GKTA Middle School Tennis League.

Coach Burns is a native of Maryville and is an alumnus of Maryville High School, graduating in 1989. While at MHS, Coach Burns was a four year letterman in tennis and band. He was Blount County Champion in 1989 at Number 3 singles and Number 2 doubles. Coach Burns is also a 1994 graduate of Carson-Newman College (University) in Jefferson City, Tennessee, earning a B.A. degree.

Coach Burns is not a stranger to the program. He has served as the Assistant Coach in 2013 and 2014. This is his 2nd year as the Head Coach of the Maryville Rebels Tennis Teams. Coach Burns, his wife Melissa, and son Colby reside in Maryville.
