The Maryville High Boys Tennis Team had its home opener today. The Rebels played host to Blount County rival Heritage in a District 4LS matchup. Maryville entered the day on a one loss skid after dropping a 4-5 decision to William Blount last Thursday.
The Rebels had hopes of playing better doubles today to set the tone for the match. Maryville would snag 2 of the 3 doubles matches to give them a 2-1 lead going into singles. The Rebels would only need to win 3 out of the 6 singles to win the Team Match. Maryville would pick up wins at the bottom of their lineup from the #5 and #6 spots to make things 4-1 in favor of the home team. Maryville would seal the team win with Matthew Gideon picking up the clinching point at #2 singles. But the match of the day would be at #1 singles as Maryville senior Ramsey Owens would battle back from an 0-4 start to push his match to a tie breaker. Owens would win the breaker 7-2.
Maryville would go on to defeat Heritage 7-2. The win improves Maryville’s record to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in District 4LS. The Rebels hit the road for their next match as they travel to Knoxville to face District 4LS foe Farragut. Match time is set for 4:30pm at TTCA.
