The Maryville High School Boys Tennis Team was back in action on Thursday afternoon at the Maryville High School Tennis Complex. The Rebels hosted cross county rival and district foe William Blount. With its 2nd match in two days, the Rebels were looking to get back on track and get their 1st win in district play. Maryville also had payback on their mind after falling 4-5 to William Blount a year ago.
The day began with doubles being played 1st. William Blount would hit the scoreboard 1st as the Governor duo of Macon and Macon would take a convincing 8-0 win on Court 1 doubles. But the Rebels would fight back and even things up as the Maryville duo of Matthew Gideon and Luke Keller would take an 8-4 win at Court 2 doubles. Maryville would take a 2-1 lead as Court 3 doubles would go the team of Andre Miller and Jude Ellison. Things looked good for the Rebels taking two of the three doubles points. Maryville would only need 3 out of 6 singles courts to avenge last year’s loss.
As play turned to Singles, the Governors turned to the top of their lineup to tie things up. Maryville’s Matthew Gideon would fall to Issac Macon 1-8. William Blount would then take the lead as Eli Macon took Court 2 8-0 over Maryville’s Nathan Dockery. The lead for William Blount would jump out to a 4-2 lead as Court 3 would go the Governor’s way as Braden Arritt would take a hard fought 8-5 win over the Rebels Eli Paszek. But here come the Rebels as Court 4 would get Maryville closer as Andre Miller would outlast William Blount’s Tommy Bond 8-6 to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Govs. Maryville would need both of the remaining courts to get the win while William Blount would be one away. Court 5 would seal the deal for William Blount with a win from Collin Robinson over Maryville’s Jude Ellison by a score of 8-0. With one court remaining, Court 6 would easily be the Boys match of the day. Maryville’s Luke Keller would battle hard for the final point and outlast Atticus Coulter with a score of 9-7. William Blount takes the duel match with a score of 5-4 for the second year in a row.
The loss for Maryville puts their record at 2-4 overall and 0-3 in District 4LS. Maryville returns to action on Monday as they are on the road to face cross county rival Heritage in District 4LS play. Match time is set for 4:30pm at Heritage High School.
