The Maryville High School Girls Tennis Team took to the courts on Thursday afternoon at the Maryville High Tennis Complex. Today’s action would be an important step in the quest for a Girls Tennis District 4LS Championship. #2 seeded Maryville would host district rival #3 Bearden in Semifinal duel match. Winner would advance to face top seeded Catholic. Maryville would hold the regular season win, beating the Lady Bulldogs on the road 8-1 in the regular season. Maryville would look to do something it has never done under Coach Burns, beat Bearden twice.
In the tournament format, singles are played first, followed by doubles in a 9 point format, playing until the clinching point (first to 5 points). Maryville would jump out 1st as Karie Schultze would take an 8-0 win over Bearden’s Gillian Line at Court 3. Maryville would get it’s second point of the day from Senior Payton Murray. Murray would take an 8-1 win at Court 4 over Kylie Stooksbury. With the Lady Rebel lead at 2-0, things were looking good for Maryville. Maryville would keep the scoring coming as Dawson Baxter would take Court 2 in an 8-2 win over Emily Chung. Needing two more courts, the drama would unfold on Courts 1 and 5. Court 1 would see a rematch of Maryville’s Noelle Beswick and Bearden’s Elle Debord. Debord would win the earlier season match up by a close score of 8-5. Looking to avenge that loss, Beswick would play close with Debord yet again. This time, Beswick would outlast Debord and take Court 1 for the Lady Rebels by a score of 8-6. Maryville leads 4-0. Needing one more court to clinch the match, Maryville would look to Beswick’s younger sister Angelique to come through. The younger Beswick would be locked in a tight battle of her own at Court 5 against Lady Bulldog Olivia Hailey. As Beswick and Hailey we’re battling on Court 5, the Court 6 match of Maryville’s Rachel Huffer and Jacqueline Juneau we’re called to take the court to begin their match. Back to the Court 5 battle. Beswick and Hailey would trade the lead back and forth and would need a tie breaker to decide their court. Beswick would win the breaker 7-4 to clinch the Court and the win for Maryville. Maryville beats Bearden for the second time this season with a 5-0 sweep! With the match clinched, Court 6 would be suspended in progress as Huffer would lead Juneau 6-3.
Maryville improves its overall record to 13-2. The win advances Maryville to the District 4LS Girls Tennis Team Championship. Maryville will face Catholic in the Championship match sometime next week after the TSSAA District 4LS Individual Tournament.
