The Maryville High School Girls Tennis Team was back in action on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Rebels traveled to Heritage to face their cross county rivals in a District 4LS duel match. Playing their third match in three days, the Lady Rebels looked to make it two wins in a row.
Maryville would start off with singles play. Maryville Freshman Rachel Huffer looked to keep her undefeated singles record in tact as she faced Heritage’s Madison Davis at Court 6. Huffer would put Maryville on the board first as she would get the 8-0 win. Maryville would keep the scoring going as Karie Schultze would be next at Court 3. Schultze would defeat Lady Mountaineer Veronica York by a score of 8-0 to make the duel match score 2-0 Maryville. The Lady Rebels would strike again at Court 2 as Dawson Baxter would take an 8-2 win over Caroline Koella. 3-0 Maryville. Heritage would get on the board as Sarah Swafford would prevail over Maryville’s Payton Murray 8-4 at Court 4. Maryville still leads 3-1 at this point. With two courts remaining in singles play, Maryville would need just two more points to clinch. Maryville would get one of those points from Angelique Beswick at Court 5. Beswick would make quick work over Lady Mountaineer Mia Sanchez with an 8-0 score to make the team score a 4-1 lead for the Lady Rebels. The singles match of the day came at Court 1. Maryville’s Noelle Beswick and Heritage’s Lane McAmis would be locked in a back and forth battle. The match would need a tie breaker to decide the outcome. Beswick would win the breaker 7-2 to win 9-8 and extend the Maryville lead to 5-1. Maryville clinches the win.
As play switched over to doubles and the match in hand for the Lady Rebels, it would be Maryville looking to sweep the doubles. Maryville would get another point from its Court 3 tandem of Angelique Beswick and Rachel Huffer. Beswick and Huffer would defeat Mia Sanchez and Allison England by a score of 8-2. Maryville leads 6-1. The remaining two doubles courts would be extremely close. Court 2 doubles would go to Maryville as Noelle Beswick and Payton Murray would win a hard fought 8-6 battle over Lady Mountaineers Veronica York and Caroline Koella With the lead extended to 7-1 for the Lady Rebels, the doubles sweep was one court away from happening. Heritage’s McAmis and Swafford would push Maryville’s Baxter and Schultze to a tie breaker. Baxter and Schultze would win the breaker 7-0 to give the final point to Maryville. Maryville defeats Heritage 8-1.
The win improves Maryville to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in District 4LS. Maryville will conclude the regular season with its final district match against Knox West on Monday, April 29th. It will also be Senior Day for the Lady Rebels as the program will honor Maryville Seniors Noelle Beswick and Payton Murray in a pre-match ceremony. Match time is set for 4:30pm at the Maryville High School Tennis Complex.
