The Maryville Girls Tennis Team hit the road today in the first of back to back to back road matches. Up first, a trip to Cedar Bluff Racquet Club to face Knoxville Catholic High School. Both teams entered the day undefeated in District 4LS. The winner of today’s duel match would most likely end the regular season as the District 4LS Champion and would obtain the top seed for the District 4LS Team Tournament.
Singles play would start the day. Catholic would jump on the board first as Keileen Cullen would take Court 2 over Maryville’s Dawson Baxter 8-0. With the lead 1-0 in favor of the Lady Irish, Knox Catholic would strike again at Court 3 as Vivian Schroeder would defeat Karie Schultze 8-0 to make the lead 2-0. Court 1 would also go to Knox Catholic as Sara Allen would lock up an 8-2 win over Maryville’s Noelle Beswick. Knox Catholic would only need two more courts to secure the win while Maryville would still be looking to get on the board as the Lady Irish lead 3-0. Ann Caroline Harris would get one of those courts for Knox Catholic as she would take Court 4 in an 8-3 win over Lady Rebel Payton Murray. With two remaining singles matches still out, Knox Catholic would now be one court away from clinching. Knox Catholic would get the clinching court from Camilla Thurman as she would take Court 5 in a 8-4 decision over Maryville’s Angelique Beswick. With the match in hand for Knox Catholic, the Lady Rebels would have something to go their way. Maryville’s Rachel Huffer would take Court 6 in a tough 8-6 win over Neely Wilson. After the singles, Knox Catholic would take a 5-1 lead going into doubles.
Doubles would be much the same for the Lady Irish. Court 1 would go to Knox Catholic as the duo of Allen and Schroeder would take out Maryville’s Baxter and Schultze by a score of 8-2 to give Catholic a 6-1 advantage. Play for the last two doubles matches would be put on hold for a bit due to the battle of Court 6 singles. Once play on Court 6 concluded, the last two doubles matches could get underway. Knox Catholic would take Court 3 as the team of Harris and Thurman would defeat Maryville’s Angelique Beswick and Rachel Huffer 8-4 to make the score 7-1 Knox Catholic. The Lady Irish would take Court 2 in similar fashion as Cullen and Wilson would also turn in an 8-4 win over Maryville’s Noelle Beswick and Payton Murray to complete the doubles sweep. Catholic defeats Maryville 8-1 and obtains sole control of District 4LS.
The loss puts Maryville at 9-2 overall and 5-1 in District 4LS. Maryville hits the road again tomorrow for another major match in District 4LS. The Lady Rebels will take on district rival Bearden at Gettysvue Country Club. Match time is set for 4:30pm.
